Despite rather high projections by Sony, the release of the Playstation 3 was very disappointing. Not nearly as many units have sold as they expected, and it was not the great money maker they hoped it would be. There are many reasons for this, but the most important ones are the cost and a lack of utilizing the video game system’s true potential. Despite these facts, the Playstation 3 will most likely sell more units in the coming months and will perhaps finally appeal to enough people to be a true impact player in the video gaming world.
When the Playstation 3 was first released in 2006, it was the most expensive video game system (and still is). It was immediately being outsold by the Nintendo Wii and XBOX 360. Only the real hardcore gamers felt a need to run out and grab a Playstation 3, some of which never even played it! There were also several different versions of it released, with varying storage capacities for memory and downloadable content. Only one of these versions was backwards compatible, meaning that video games from the Playstation One and Playstation 2 could be played on it as well. A lot of people were upset that this feature was not in all of the versions and that they would have to keep their original Playstation system hooked up and plugged in if they wanted to play their older video games. Unfortunately for them, the backwards compatible version was discontinued soon after, and is no longer available. Sony hoped that the Blu-Ray Disc reader would be enough incentive to get people to buy them despite the high cost, but so far that has not been the case.
It is very possible that more people would have bought the Playstation 3 by now if the system really lived up to its potential. So far, most of their video games feel like Playstation 2 video games, aside from a visibly greater graphics detail. Only a few video games, such as “Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” and “Grand Theft Auto IV” have really turned heads. And many of the other video games that are popular like “Resident Evil 5” have also been released on other systems. In fact, there have been a handful of video games including “WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009” that were released on both the Playstation 2 and the Playstation 3, with hardly any noticeable differences between the two. Why would someone want to go out and spend $500 on a system just for better graphics when they can play the exact same game on the Playsation 2 that they already have? The engine of the Playstation 3 is far more advanced than the Playstation 2, but the develops do not seem to have figured out exactly how to capitalize on it consistently.
Fortunately for gamers, there is definitely a light at the end of this tunnel. The price of the Playstation 3 is expected to be dropped in the coming months. Whether it is the pressure of the poor economy or a strategic attempt to compete with the other systems, no one knows for sure. If these price drops do occur, Sony should instantly enjoy a boom in sales by all the consumers who have been constantly checking the price anticipating the drop. Furthermore, Sony has publicly acknowledged that it intends to really push the Playstation 3 to its limits. One of the video games that hopes to do this is “God of War III”. “God of War” has become an extremely popular Playstation franchise and the third installment of the series is set to be released in late 2009 only for the Playstation 3. According to Game Informer magazine, Game Director Stig Asmussen has said, “we want this [God of War III] to be the game that shows people what the PS3 can do.”
If Sony does drop its prices and game developers like Stig Asmussen continue to push the Playstation 3 to its limits, there is no doubt that the popularity and appeal of the system as a whole will grow to new heights.
